We hope your new year is off to a great start!
With the beginning of a new year, comes the start of another season with our garden program and all of our students at Mitchell Elementary! We are thrilled about what we have in store for the program this Spring – and the only thing missing to make the program complete(ly) (awesome) is you! All of our classes need Green Heart Buddies to help them grow their garden for the spring season and we would love for you to get involved and sponsor a class!
What does sponsoring a class entail?
Each of our 3rd – 6th grade classes meet in the garden for 1 hour every other week for a total of 8 garden sessions over the course of the Spring. They perform garden and cooking activities as they relate to classroom curriculum and fresh local produce! And it’s always so much more fun with the help of some great Green Heart Buddies.
Duties & Responsibilities: Buddies play a key role in helping to grow our garden, our community and our students at Mitchell Elementary. They are urban farmers that help our students dig, build, plant, water, harvest and get excited about healthy, local produce. They are teachers that help engage our students in garden lessons and cooking activities through working with them in small groups. And they are role models for our students and our community that embody the 3 rules of our farm-to-school program:
RESPECT YOURSELF RESPECT YOUR BUDDIES RESPECT YOURSELF
Time Commitment: We ask that our Buddies sponsor a class by joining them in the garden for each of the 8 times they come out for a Green Heart Session. The total time commitment is 8-10 hours over the course of the Spring season, January – May. See the Mitchell class schedule for the Spring below.
Volunteer Location: Each of our garden sessions takes place in the urban farm at Mitchell Elementary School, located here:
Qualifications: Green Heart Buddies do not need any prior gardening or teaching experience. They must be cordial and willing to work with students of all ages. Being polite, patient and respectful is a must as Buddies are a role model for all of our students. Remember, a Green Heart Buddy’s interest in the lesson and activity will serve as an example to our students–by being inquisitive and engaged, Buddies are promoting the importance of life-long learning! Green Heart Buddies must complete and pass a background check provided by Charleston County School District in order to volunteer with students.
We also need some help with our Middle School Program at Zucker Middle School in North Charleston! We are looking for volunteers to join us on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:00.
