Limehouse Produce Stole Our Big [GREEN] Hearts
Limehouse Produce has been providing farmed produce and unique products to restaurants in the Charleston area for more than 70 years. They work tirelessly to source the freshest produce from over 70 farmers around the country. And if that isn’t enough – they support the land and the local community through contributions to local charities, including Lowcountry Local First, The Lowcountry Food Bank and the Charleston Wine & Food Festival. They are one of the Food Waster Disposal’s biggest contributors of organic matter to be converted into compost. As you can see, they have a BIG Green Heart.
Limehouse Produce has been a partner of the Green Heart Project and our Harvest Dinner since we started the Mitchell Garden back in 2009, providing fresh produce to the dinners and give financially. Drew Harrison, our Executive Director, reflects: “I can remember Andrea & Jack Limehouse standing in line at one of our first Harvest Dinners – when it was still held inside the Mitchell Cafeteria. We hadn’t expected to have that many people turnout and the line backed up all the way outside the building. I think they did more standing in line than eating, but they came out to support what we were doing – in more ways than one. They supported us then and they support us now – and we are unbelievable grateful for their support.
Limehouse has always seen the intricate connection between healthy local food and a healthy local community. And now for the 4th year in a row, Limehouse Produce has generously donated hundreds of pounds of fresh produce from local farms and coordinated with Jamie Westendorff to BBQ pork and chicken in order to make the Green Heart Project’s Harvest Dinner a success. With what we are able to harvest from our urban farm and school gardens, they supplement our menu with local, fresh ingredients to highlight the season and bring everyone together over food.
As patrons of local food and an organization dedicated to strengthening our local food community, we are certain that the Green Heart Project is not the only organization that is able to make the impact we do in our community because of the support of Andrea and Limehouse Produce.
