Garden Educator (full-time)
Garden Educators help young people connect with food, nature, and community through joyful, hands-on learning in our farms and gardens across the Charleston area. This is the ideal opportunity for someone with a background in youth education looking to gain more experience in a community-based nonprofit setting.
We are seeking a full-time Garden Educator to support our Farm to School and Youth Development programs with elementary, middle, and high school students. This position maintains productive school gardens, collaborates with school staff and community volunteers, and plans and facilitates hands-on learning activities that foster academic and personal growth, environmental stewardship, and community connection. Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Must have bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience and training.
- Must have experience teaching or leading elementary, middle, or high school students in a structured setting, ideally in food, farming, environmental, or health education.
- Must have strong interpersonal skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including collaborative applications such as Microsoft Suite or Google Workspace.
- Must be comfortable with “getting your hands dirty” and working in an outdoor environment on a regular basis.
- Skilled in group management (students and adult volunteers).
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated strong teamwork skills.
- Strong commitment to promoting and supporting health, education, and volunteerism.
- Ability to create a safe and inclusive space for a diverse community of stakeholders.
- High level of motivation and commitment to support and facilitate The Green Heart Project’s mission and philosophy.
- Ability to collaborate with a variety of school systems and community partners to build a positive public relationship.
Garden Volunteer
We are always looking for volunteers to support our school gardens and the Urban Farm at Enston Home!
Garden Volunteers commit to garden work days or special projects throughout the semester. Our work days have a capped number of volunteer spaces. Garden work days are posted on our Events Calendar, so take a look, sign up and we’ll see you out in the garden!
DetailsUrban Farm Field Trips
Interested in bringing a group of students to the Urban Farm at Enston Home? A Green Heart Urban Farm Field Trip will consist of a farm tour, hands on garden activity, and a farm-fresh taste-test. Field trips can be designed to the meet the needs of your students and cover a wide range of topics. Please note there is a cost of $10/person for field trips – however, if this cost is prohibitive, we are happy to discuss payment with you further.

Garden Volunteers: We are always looking for qualified & passionate volunteers to support our farm & gardens throughout the year. Garden Volunteers commit to garden work days or special projects throughout the year. Spring workday dates are posted on our Events Calendar, so take a look, sign up, and we’ll see you out in the garden!
Volunteer Groups: We are currently accepting groups of 15 people or fewer to volunteer on Thursday evenings at the Urban Farm at Enston Home. We require volunteers to register on our Events Calendar beforehand, so please check to see if there are spots available. Outside of Thursday evenings, we organize a limited number of special garden volunteer events for our financial sponsors. If you are interested in sponsorship, please contact Executive Director, Jesse Blom at jesse@greenheartsc.org.
