Gettin’ Wicky With It
A few weeks ago, the Green Heart Project hosted a workshop in collaboration with Perrin Woodworking, to demonstrate a unique, self-irrigating raised ‘wicking’ bed system that can work well in this Charleston Summer and in your back yard! The workshop was a part of a Charleston Upper Peninsula Gathering Event, which invites the community out to talk about and learn how our downtown community, especially in the upper peninsula, can grow wisely and sustainably. We had a great turn out for the workshop and event and grateful to be included. For those of you who missed – below is some more info wicking beds and some photos from the event.
Wicking Beds – essentially, a wicking bed is a raised bed that has a contained, water-reservoir in the bottom of the bed. This water-reservoir is created with pond-liner, gravel and corrugated pipe and is separated by a piece of landscaping cloth. Because of the soil’s natural ability to ‘wick’ water through it, the water-reservoir, once filled, can irrigate the bed’s soil for up weeks! It’s a great way design for the small, home-gardener or a school garden!
See below for pictures of the workshop and you can find more on facebook, thanks to Foxworthy Studios!
