Growing a Food Scrap Garden
As people have more time on their hands and are looking to minimize trips to the grocery store or local market, home gardens are surging. And while some may have garden beds or designated garden space at their homes, in many cases all it takes is some fruit or veggie scraps, water and a shallow container to turn your food waste into an at-home edible garden!
TODAY’S LESSON- Growing a Food Scrap Garden
LESSON CONTENT- In today’s lesson, we will learn about how to turn produce scraps into a new plant. Using the “Growing a Food Scrap Garden” guide and attached video, students will:
- Determine what store-bought produce can be regrown at home
- Learn the steps of how to regrow various store-bought fruits, herbs and vegetables
- Practice their gardening skills by replanting produce scraps to grow their own at-home garden
LESSON MATERIALS- For today’s lesson, you will need:
- Scraps from produce that as noted on the Food Scrap Garden guide
- Replanting materials (depending on what you’re regrowing) which could include: water, shallow container, soil, pots or other container to hold plants and soil, and toothpicks
- A computer, iPad, phone or other digital device to watch the additional resource video
